Duas for commencing, ending and completing Qur'an recitation

Transliteration

allahumma inni ashhadu ann hadha kitabuka almunzalu min `indika ala rasulika muhammadi bni `abdillahi salla allahu `alayhi wa alihi wa kalamuka alnnatiqu `ala lisani nabiyyika ja`altahu hadiyan minka ila khalqika wa hablan muttsilan fima baynaka wa bayna `ibadika allahumma inni nashartu `ahdaka wa kitabaka allahumma faj`al nazary fihi `ibadatan wa qira‘aty fihi fikran wa fikry fihi a`tibaran waj`alny mimmn att`aza bibayani mawa`izika fihi wajtanaba ma`asiyaka wa la tatba` `inda qira‘aty `ala sam`i wa la taj`al `ala basary ghishawatan wa la taj`al qira‘aty qira‘atan la tadabbara fiha bali aj`alny atadabbru ayatihi wa ahkamahu Learning the laws of my religion wa la taj`al nazary fihi ghaflatan wa la qira‘aty hadharan innaka anta alrra´ufu alrrahimu

Translation

O Allah I testify that this is the Book revealed by Thee on Thy Messenger Muhammad bin Abdillah, blessings of Allah be on him and on his children; (these are) Thy Words, Thy Prophet gave tongue to, (whom) Thou appointed as a Guide for the people, and an uninterrupted closely connected link of protecting friendship between Thee and Thy servants. O Allah I make publicly known Thy testament and Thy Book. O Allah let me pay full attention to (this) adorable pious work; let me notice and take warning from (this)thoughtful reflection;< let me be one of them who exhort themselves from Thy plain warnings and preaching found in this Book, and keep from that which Thou has made unlawful. Do not seal my hearing and do not cover my eyes when I recite (it). Do not let me recite for the sake of recitation , paying no attention to its meaning, but let me contemplate over its signs and commands, to know and understand the modus operandi of Thy religion. Do not let my concentration go slack, nor my recitation be like a delirious monologue. Verily Thou art full of pity, Merciful.

Transliteration

allaahumma rabbanaa lakal-hamd wa lakal-hamdu antal-muta'aalee bil-'izzi wal-kibriyaa' rabbanaa wa lakal-hamdu antal-muktafee bi-'ilmik yaa munzilal-aayaati wadh-dhikril-'azeem allaahumma anta 'allamtanaa qabla raghbatinaa fee ta'allumih allaahumma fa-idhaa kaana dhaalika mannam-minka wa fadlaw-wa joodaa allaahumma fahabbib ilaynaa husna tilaawatih wa sababan fee ta'weelihee wa hudan fee tadbeerihee wa baseeratam-binoorih allaahumma faj'alhu lanaa hisnam-min 'adhaabika wa hirzam-min ghadabika wa haajizan 'an ma'siyatika wa 'ismatam-min sakhatika wa daleelan 'alaa ta'atik allaahumma innaa na'oodhu bika minash-shiqwati fee hamlihee wal-'amaa 'an 'amalih allaahummah-mil 'annaa thiqlahu wa awjib lanaa ajrahu wa awzi'naa shukrahu waj'alnaa nuraa'eehi wa nahfazuh allaahummar-zuqnaa halaawatan fee tilaawatihee wa nashaatan fee qiyaamih

Translation

O Allah! Our Lord! To You belongs all praise. and to You belongs all praise.You are exalted in Your might and supremacy Our Lord, to You belongs all praise! O sender of the signs and the Great Reminder! O Allah! You taught it to us before we could be eager to learn it, O Allah! As such has been Your favour toward us, O Allah, grant us the passion for the charm of its recitation, the means to interpreting it,guidance in contemplating it,and inner vision through its light. so also, O Allah, make it for us a shield against Your punishment, a bulwark against Your wrath, a safeguard against Your disobedience, a protection from Your displeasure, a guide to Your obedience, and, O Allah! We seek Your protection from wretchedness in bearing it, from blindness in practicing it, O Allah! Lighten for us its burden, appoint for us its reward, inspire us to give thanks for it, and enable us to observe it and secure it. O Allah! Grant us sweetness of its recitation, animation in its performance,

Transliteration

wa quwwatan feesti'maalihee fee aanaa'il-layli wa atraafin-nahaar wa ayqiznaa fee saa'atil-layli mir-ruqaadir-raaqideena wa nabbihnaa 'indal-ahaayeen al-wasnaaneen wa 'ibratan 'inda tarjee'ih allaahumma innaa na'oodhu bika min takhallufihee fee quloobinaa wa nabdhihee waraa'a zuhoorinaa allaahumman-fa'naa bimaa sarafta feehi minal-aayaati wa dhakkirnaa bimaa darabta feehi minal-mathulaat wa daa'if lanaa bihee jazaa'an feel-hasanaat wa laqqinaa bihil-bushraa ba'dal-mamaat wa tareeqan waadihan nasluku bihee ilayka wa fa-innakattakhadhta bihee 'alaynaa hujjatan qata'ta bihee 'udhranaa was-tana'ta bihee 'indanaa ni'matan qasara 'anhaa shukrunaa hattaa yablugha binaa afdalal-amal

Translation

and strength in putting it into practice in the watches of the night and at the ends of the day. and awaken us in the hour of the night from the sleep of the slumberers, and arouse us, at the moments from the drowsiness of the drowsy. take lesson from it when consulting it, O Allah! We seek Your protection from letting it languish in our hearts, and from casting it behind our backs. O Allah! Give us the benefit of the signs You have variegated in it, admonish us by the parables You have drawn in it, double through it our reward of good deeds, and give us good news through it after death! a clear path by which we may travel towards You, for You have made it an argument against us, whereby You have cut off our excuses, and granted thereby a blessing, for which we can, never thank You enough! thus enabling us to realize our best aspirations.

Transliteration

wa nooran yawmaz-zalmaa'i yawma laa arda wa laa samaa'a yawma yujzaa kullu saa'im-bimaa sa'aa wa fawzan yawmal-jazaa'i min naarin haamiyatin qaleolatil-buqyaa 'alaa mam-bihastalawa bi-harrihaa talazzaa allaahummar-zuqnaa manaazilash-shuhadaa'i wa 'ayshas-su'adaa'i wa muraafaqatal-ambiyaa'i innaka samee'ud-du'aa'

Translation

and a light on the Day of Darkness, the Day when there is neither earth nor sky, the Day when every striver will be recompensed for what he strived for a means of deliverance on the day of retribution from the scorching Fire unsparing to anyone who enters it and is inflamed by its heat O Allah! Grant us the stations of the martyrs, the life of the felicitous and the company of the prophets. Indeed You hear all supplications!

Transliteration

allahumma inni qad qara’tu ma qadayta min kitabika alladhy anzaltahu `ala nabiyyIka alssadiqi salla allahu `alayhi wa alihi falaka alhamdu rabbana O Allah let me be one of those who take to the lawful and keep from the unlawful, accept and show submissionto its clear as well as consimilar commands, waj`alny mimman turaqqihi bikulli aiyatin qara-aha darajatan fi a`la `illiyyina amina rabba al`alamina

Translation

O Allah I have recited that which Thou commands from Thy Book Thou revealed to Thy truthful Prophet, blessings of Allah be on him and on his children. (All) praise be to our Lord. وَ اجْعَلْهُ لِي أُنْساً فِي قَبْرِي وَ أُنْساً فِي حَشْرِي and let me be one of those whom Thou shall raise and exalt, on account of this recitation, on the highest pedestal in the Paradise. Be it so O the Lord of the worlds.

Transliteration

O’ Allah! I have recited that which You have decreed for me to recite from Your Book which You sent upon Your Prophet Muhammad, may Your prayers and peace be upon him, so then praise belongs to You, our Lord. And gratitude belongs to you because of the power and grace given me. O God! Make the Quran an instrument of love in my grave and an instrument of love when I am raised up, and raise me for the verses I recited up a stage from the highest of the high, Amin, O Lord of all the Worlds. And bless their successors who are the guardian and trustee of the message. Be the peace, God's mercy, and His blessings upon all of them!

Translation

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي مِمَّنْ يُحِلُّ حَلَالَكَ وَ يُحَرِّمُ حَرَامَكَ وَ يَجْتَنِبُ‏ مَعَاصِيَكَ وَ يُؤْمِنُ بِمُحْكَمِهِ وَ مُتَشَابِهِهِ وَ نَاسِخِهِ وَ مَنْسُوخِهِ وَ اجْعَلْهُ لِي شِفَاءً وَ رَحْمَةً وَ حِرْزاً وَ ذُخْرا اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ نَبِيِّكَ وَ صَفِيِّكَ وَ نَجِيِّكَ وَ دَلِيلِكَ وَ الدَّاعِي إِلَى سَبِيلِكَ وَ عَلَى أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَلِيِّكَ وَ خَلِيفَتِكَ مِنْ بَعْدِ رَسُولِكَ

Transliteration

allahumma ashrah bilqur’ani sadri wasta`mil bilqur’ani badani wa nawwir bilqur’ani basari wa atliq bilqur’ani lisani wa a`inni `alayhi ma abqaytany fa’innahu la hawla wa la quwwata illa bika

Translation

O Allah: (please) expand my breast through the Qur'an And use my body for the Qur'an And enlighten my sight by the Qur'an And make my tongue eloquent by the Qur'an And help me carry out its duty as long as You keep me alive, For there is neither power nor might save with You.

Transliteration

Bismillaahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem. Allaahummaa Innee As’aluka Ikhbaatal Mukhbiteen Wa Ikhlaaswal Mooqineen Wa Muraafaqatal Abraari Wa Istihqaaq Haqaaikil Eemaani Wal Ghaneemata Min Kulli Birrin Was-Salaamata Min Kulli Ismin Wa Wujooba Rahmatik Wa Azaaima Maghfiratik Wal Fawza Bil Jannati Wa Najaatam-Minan-Naar.

Translation

"In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. O Allah! I ask You for the humility of the humble, the sincerity of the convinced, the companionship of the righteous, the realization of the truths of faith, the attainment of every virtue, safety from every sin, the certainty of Your mercy, the determination of Your forgiveness, success in attaining Paradise, and salvation from the Fire."

Transliteration

Allahumma inni asaluka ikhbattal mukhbitina wa ikhlasal muqinina wa murafaqatal abrar Wastihqaqa haqaiqil imani wal ghanimata min kulli birrin was-salamata min kulli ithm Wa wujuba rahmatika wa azaima maghfiratika wal fawza bil jannati wan-najata minan nar

Translation

O God! Surely, I ask You for the humbleness of the humbles, the sincerity of those who are sure, the companionship of the righteous, the merit of receiving the truths of faith, the enjoyment of all goodness, the protection from all sins, the admittance into Your mercy, the achievement of Your great graces, the salvation and reaching Your paradise and saving from the fire of hell.

Transliteration

Allaahummar h’amnee bitaraki maa’a’s’eeka abadam maa abqaitanee farh’amni min takallufi maa yai’neenee warzuqnee h’usnal manz’ari feemaa yurz”eeka a’nnee walzim qalbee h’ifz’a kitaabika kamaa a’llamtanee warzuqnee wa atluwahu a’lan naj’willadhee yurz”eeka a’nnee. Allaahumma nawwir bas’aree washrah’ bihi s’adree wa farrij bihi qalbee wat’liq bihi lisaanee wasta’mil bihi badanee wa qawwinee a’laa dhaalika wa aa’nnee a’laihi innahu laa mue’e’na a’laihi illaa anta laa ilaaha illaa ant.

Translation

O Allah bestow upon me Your mercy so that I am away from Your disobedience always, and bestow the grace that I am not involved in unbearable difficulties, and grant me the goodness for deeds which make You happy with me, and make the memorizing of Your book (the Holy Quran) obligatory on me as You have granted me it’s knowledge, and bestow Your grace so that I recite it in the way Your pleasure is gained. Allaahumma nawwir bas’aree washrah’ bihi s’adree wa farrij bihi qalbee wat’liq bihi lisaanee wasta’mil bihi badanee wa qawwinee a’laa dhaalika wa aa’nnee a’laihi innahu laa mue’e’na a’laihi illaa anta laa ilaaha illaa ant.
